A Short History Of Harley Engines

Harley-Davidson® has an enduring legacy of excellence. For over a century, Harley-Davidson® has designed the best engines on the road, making breakthroughs in the fields of motorcycle engineering and technology. In 1936, the first air-cooled engine was introduced, known as the Knucklehead, which replaced the Flathead engine that the company’s bikes previously used.

While these motors were rudimentary compared to today, they were the first step towards true greatness. The Knucklehead, which was nicknamed thus because of its valve covers that resemble the knuckles on a person’s fist, was the third Harley V-Twin engine made. Every air-cooled engine manufactured by Harley-Davidson® since the 1930s owes its existence to the Knucklehead engine, which was produced until 1947.

In 1948, Harley-Davidson® released its next overhead valve engine, nicknamed the Panhead or its rocker covers that took on the shape of kitchen cooking pans. This style of two-cylinder engine endured for a few decades, being showcased in movies such as Easy Rider, which is a testament to the popularity of Harley motorcycles.

In 1965, the first Shovelhead™  engines were introduced, marking a huge leap forward for touring bikes. The Shovelhead™  engines were added to the original Electra-Glide® touring bikes, providing power that had never been seen before. In 1999, the first Twin-Cam engines made their way to the market with their revolutionary torque. And now, Harley-Davidson® is proud to introduce the next powerful engine in their lineup: the Milwaukee-Eight™ engine.

High Performance

The Milwaukee-Eight™ features the highest performance V-Twin ever produced by Harley-Davidson® and an eight-valve design to reduce emissions. You’ll find you get excellent fuel economy with the Milwaukee-Eight™ engine. A precision cooling system has been incorporated to efficiently pull heat away from the engine. Furthermore, the Milwaukee-Eight™ is rubber-mounted and features a counterbalancer, which allows you to ride more comfortably on your bike, especially for long trips on the highway.

Even More Power

Harley-Davidson® has designed the Milwaukee-Eight™ to provide the most touring power possible in a motorcycle engine. The Milwaukee-Eight™ was made to replace its predecessor, the Twin-Cam engine. The engine is 4 cubic inches larger than the Twin-Cam, but the weight is about the same. This power-to-weight ratio provides a full 10% increase in torque, for a grand total of 111 ft. lbs of torque. The 2017 CVO™ Touring bikes boast a 114 cubic inch Milwaukee-Eight™ engine, which makes them ideal for riders who want to have a passenger riding on the back. A Screamin’ Eagle® Stage III upgrade to your 2017 touring motorcycle will bring your engine up to a massive 117 cubic inches from the stock 107 cubic inches.
